High‐Altitude Polar NM With the New DAQ System as a Tool to Study Details of the Cosmic‐Ray Induced Nucleonic Cascade

A neutron monitor (NM) is, since the 1950s, a standard ground-based detector whose count rate reflects cosmic-ray variability. The worldwide network of NMs forms rough spectrometer for cosmic rays. Recently, brand-new data acquisition (DAQ) system has been installed on DOMC and DOMB NMs, located at Concordia research station Central Antarctic plateau. new DAQ digitizes, 2-MHz sampling rate, records all individual pulses corresponding to secondary particles in detector. An analysis pulse characteristics (viz. shape, magnitude, duration, waiting time) performed, several clearly distinguishable branches were identified: (A) signal from neutrons; (B) representing detector's noise; (C) double {shortly separated nucleons same} atmospheric cascades; (D) very-high multiple which are likely caused by muons; (E) potentially contamination neighbouring time distributions revealed two peaks: peak (I) about 1 msec being related intra-cascade diffusion thermalisation (II) 30--1000 cascades. This opens possibility study spectra single location as well details induced cascades, using same dataset.
